Sun Valley announces 2022 Summer and Fall Flight Schedule

SUN offers nonstop service to six cities with extended summer and fall flights

  • United Chicago flights extended into summer
  • United Los Angeles and San Francisco flights extended through September
  • Alaska Seattle flights will transition to E175 regional jets in September

Sun Valley, Idaho…. Fly Sun Valley Alliance (FSVA), in partnership with Sun Valley Resort and the
Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN), recently announced the SUN airline flight schedule for the 2022
summer and fall season which will offer nonstop flights to six cities – Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles,
San Francisco, Denver, and Salt Lake City – with extended service to Chicago, Los Angeles, and San
Francisco.

For the past three years SUN has had United Chicago (ORD) service in the winter, and now, with travel
demand back on the rise, United is adding two weekly flights on Saturday and Sunday from late June
through early September – a total of 22 flights for the season. The extended service to this major United
Airlines hub will provide more one-stop connections from SUN to hundreds of US and international
markets.

In addition, United is extending its nonstop Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) flights to run
twice weekly, on Wednesday and Sunday, in September instead of ending on Labor Day.
For the summer season, United Airlines will offer nonstop Denver (DEN) flights daily June 3 through
December, nonstop Los Angeles (LAX) flights twice weekly on Wednesday and Sunday June 8-22 and
September 7-25 and daily June 24 -September 5, twice weekly nonstop flights San Francisco (SFO) on
Wednesday and Saturday June 4-22 and September 7-25 and daily from June 24 – September 5 and
nonstop Chicago (ORD) flights twice weekly on Saturdays and Sundays from June 25 through
September 5.

Delta Air Lines year-round service will include two daily nonstop Salt Lake City (SLC) flights beginning
May 18, when the airport reopens, increasing to three daily nonstop flights from June 6 through
December.

Alaska Airlines will operate its nonstop Seattle (SEA) flights on a year-round basis, with four flights per
week on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from May 19 – June 12, daily flights from June 16 –
September 6 and twice weekly flights on Thursday and Sunday from September 8 through mid-
December. Beginning September 8, Alaska will begin flying their Seattle route with E175 regional jets,
replacing the older Q400 turbo prop planes.

Fly Sun Valley Alliance Director Carol Waller noted, “We know that people are eager to get out and
travel and these extensions to our air service for summer and fall will provide more options for local
residents and visitors.” Waller noted that pilot shortages remain an ongoing challenge for airlines and
SUN is fortunate to continue to maintain good air service levels while other airports have lost service.

The overall SUN scheduled seat capacity for the 2022 summer/fall season, May through October, is
down 12% from 2021, due to the airport closure for part of May and a reduction in SLC flight frequency
from summer 2021. SUN seats were down substantially in summer 2020 due to the pandemic and then
up significantly in 2021 due to an increase of three to four daily Delta SLC flights. Waller noted that
Delta added more flights to SUN last summer due to reduced demand across their system. Now that
travel demand has rebounded in other markets, Delta will return to its normal three daily SUN-SLC
flight schedule for 2022 summer season.
